Pre-Kindergarten Classes

This activity provides three Pre-Kindergarten classes for at least 54 at-risk four-year-olds in three elementary schools in Duplin County. The Pre-Kindergarten classes use age-appropriate instructional practices. The teachers use two curriculums. The Creative Curriculum is used to in order to provide an opportunity for children to choose from many options available to them so that they are empowered with a high level of personal responsibility for solving problems, initiating their own learning, and reaching out to care for others. The learning environment is organized around eight interest areas: blocks, dramatic play (playing house), table toys, art, sand and water, library, music and movement, and the outdoor environment. Additionally, computers are available for children to use. In addition, LeapFrog Schoolhouse Curriculum is used in the classroom because it provides emphasis on early literacy skills such as vocabulary development, alphabet knowledge, print awareness, phonemic awareness and listening comprehension.
